Primer chapter · PSYCHOLOGY

People, pressure and judgment

At a glance

Psychological insight is most useful when it makes an analyst more careful about motives, bias and uncertainty. It should not turn behavioural clues into a claim of mind-reading or manipulation into a promise of control.

Practical psychology without the mind-reading myths.

Key distinctions

The essentials

Interpreting behaviour

Analysts distinguish a person’s actions from possible explanations of their motives; one action may have several plausible explanations.

Judgment under pressure

An analyst can remain empathetic while assessing evidence carefully and keeping personal reactions separate from conclusions.

Analytical disagreement

Analysts improve a judgment by examining disputed evidence and assumptions. Agreement is not always possible or necessary.
